The Annual National Service for Seafarers

The Annual National Service for Seafarers

The Annual National Service for Seafarers (ANSS), organised by Seafarers UK was due to take place at St Paul’s Cathedral today (11th October 2017). Unfortunately, it had to be cancelled following a tragic accident at the cathedral.

The service is held to commemorate and celebrate seafarers and the work they have done to protect our shores, sea lines of communication, and to enable the movement of goods.

Seafarers from across the maritime professions together with representatives of all sectors in the seafaring community, including Royal and Merchant Navies, the fishing industry, commercial shipping, nautical schools, maritime youth groups and veterans’ associations take the opportunity of gathering together in a thanksgiving service.

It is a service of gratitude to those who work at sea, where life is hard and dangerous.  A life more hazardous than most, exposed to severe weather, long hours and a greater chance of injury; these are the people who brave the storms.

To those who live on this island and who are dependant upon those hardy souls who sail our waters, their work is invaluable. We tender our gratitude to you and hopes for a safe passage and calm waters in the year ahead.
