The World Ocean.

The seas we call our own are part of one large body of water.  This World Ocean is made up of the Atlantic, Arctic, Indian, Pacific, and Southern Oceans. These combined oceans make up more than 70% of the earths surface.

Oceans are a significant source of oxygen for our planet and are instrumental in the capture and storage of carbon dioxide. Marine species provides livelihoods, medicines and of course food as well as supporting the tourism industry and recreational activities around the world.

What can we do.

It was World Ocean Day last week which threw light onto the plight of our seas. David Attenborough brought the condition of the earth’s waters into the public eye with his television series, Blue Planet II. He also brought words of hope and ways in which we as individuals can help our five oceans.

In April, the British government announced plans to end to the sale of plastic straws, drink stirrers and plastic-stemmed cotton swabs to protect the marine environment. It’s just one of many projects to help improve the health of our global waters.

“We’ve become aware of what we’ve done to the world and the responsibility we have for looking after the wild world,” Sir David Attenborough said. “There are so many simple things we can do. It’s absurd to suggest that we can do totally without plastic but there are certainly so many, many areas where we use plastic without a thought.”

The internet is full of ideas of how we can help. I’ve included a few links at the bottom of this post for additional info, although you probably know what to do already and possibly even do quite a bit.

Let us celebrate our oceans, marvel at their beauty and investigate ways in which we can do more to help.
