Hygge
Despite many articles in the media encouraging us to enjoy a minimalist lifestyle, I find myself standing with the Danish who have embraced the warmth of Hygge (pronounced ‘hoo-ga.’) Hygge is described as the Danish ritual of enjoying life’s simple pleasures. It’s lighting the candles on dark nights, being with friends and family, maybe enjoying something sweet to eat; warm to drink, being cosy, comfortable and warm.
Here on the West Coast of Scotland, I’m afraid bare floorboards and stripped back pine holds little appeal unless there are also plenty of rugs. A good stack of logs to feed the roaring fire, a pair of warm socks, a hot chocolate (or cup of tea in my case) and a good book. We may complain about the weather but adoptive Hygge is the definite upside to a cold Scottish winter.
